Maurizio Dicandia

Man on Fire

Identity and Position

Maurizio Dicandia is one of Don Cantarella’s top advisers. His role brings him into the organization’s deliberations about discipline and control: he assesses the damage caused by Fossella’s handling of a kidnapping and is later sent to confront him on Cantarella’s behalf.

The Fossella Reprimand

Dicandia calls the kidnapping of the Balletto girl badly handled. She had been abused and died in the car, he points out, and the episode left the public hostile and generated pressure for weeks. His criticism treats the violence not only as a crime but as a failure of organizational control and reputation.

Don Cantarella directs Dicandia to go to Milan, convey displeasure to Fossella, demand better control in the future, and insist that Fossella honor his deal with Delorie. Cantarella acknowledges that Fossella is Floriano Conti’s direct responsibility, but chooses to issue the reprimand himself. Dicandia is thus assigned to carry the message between senior figures, as the leadership tries to contain the consequences of Fossella’s conduct.

The Organization in Crisis

Later, Dicandia is with Cesare Gravelli after they confer with guards outside the main gates. Gravelli describes mounting disorder: conflict in Turin, three Families facing off in Rome, trouble in Calabria, and an attempt on Don Mommo’s life despite a promise of tranquillity. He condemns Cantarella’s inaction and says Abrata is due to arrive the next day. Dicandia is the recipient of this assessment as the advisers move through the gardens, a setting that places their private doubts against the violence gathering around the organization.

Death

During the final confrontation, Cantarella orders the men to go down the stairs and raises his pistol. Dicandia edges onto the first step; only his upper body is visible to Cantarella. Gunfire ripples through the passage, and Cantarella sees Dicandia jerk upward, with a row of wounds opening across his chest, before he slumps and slides down the steps. The adviser who had been sent to impose discipline on Fossella is himself struck down by the leader whose authority he had served.
